Many college football analysts are on the fence regarding Bill Belichick and his job security with the North Carolina Tar Heels. Finebaum has never bitten his tongue when he believes a college coach should be fired, so he didn’t hold back during his Tuesday appearance on “First Take” when the topic of Belichick and his rocky UNC tenure came up. But Finebaum’s ridicule of Belichick didn’t stop there.
He explained all the reasons why he — and many others — are rooting for Belichick to fail, not the least of which is because the 74-year-old has been nothing short of a chaos agent from the time he stepped foot on campus. He couldn’t accept that nobody in the NFL wanted him anymore. … Bill Belichick had to find a university that would offer him a job and he would show the world that he is the greatest coach of all time.” To Finebaum’s point, Belichick compiled a 302-165 record with six Super Bowl championships as head coach of the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots. However, his crotchety demeanor and his difficult-to-work-with reputation kept him from landing another NFL job after he and the Patriots parted ways after the 2023 season, which led to him landing in Chapel Hill.
But Belichick’s NFL success didn’t translate to the college game. He went 4-8 in his first season with UNC, and he was out-coached and his team out-matched on a seemingly weekly basis. At this point in his career, Belichick may be doing more harm than good to his legacy.
He probably won’t break the NFL record for all-time head-coaching wins (he’s 26 behind Don Shula), and it can be argued even in the unlikely event he wins a national championship in college, it does nothing to boost his coaching profile.
