Six-time major champion Rory McIlroy could have faced a punishment from the PGA Tour for not playing in the necessary amount of tournaments. Golfers on the tour must play in 15 PGA Tour-sponsored events in order to keep their card for the next season. As it stands now, McIlroy will only play in 14 events through the end of the season before moving on to play international events on the DP World Tour later this fall.
On Tuesday afternoon, PGA Tour commissioner Brian Rolapp hinted the two reached a compromise and it doesn't appear McIlroy will be handed a punishment from the tour this season. "I think he feels passionately [and] is certainly dedicated to it.
He also feels a dedication to the DP World Tour, as well, given his legacy and where he's from." The PGA Tour commissioner and CEO revealed he has a "fair amount of discretion" regarding potential punishments and added the tour might examine whether the rule needs to be in place, given the PGA Tour's alliance with the DP World Tour. "It's a rule that applies just to dual members," Rolapp said. "It's questionable if it even has a place in our new competitive model.
