The Philadelphia Phillies have added a new pitcher to their depth. The Phillies have announced that they have claimed pitcher Andrew Hoffmann off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. This comes just a few days after the 6-foot-5 righty was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks.
The Phillies also shared that they have assigned Hoffmann to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. There is no real harm in the Phillies claiming Hoffmann off of waivers. He will now provide them with another relief pitcher in their system who has some MLB experience.
Hoffmann appeared in eight games this season with the Diamondbacks before being placed on waivers, where he posted a 1-0 record, a 7.71 ERA, and 12 strikeouts. This was after he appeared in his first 11 career MLB games split between the Kansas City Royals and the Diamondbacks this past season, posting a 1-1 record and a 6.00 ERA. Hoffmann has also appeared in 12 Triple-A games this season, where he has a 1-1 record, a 6.08 ERA, and 11 strikeouts.
Overall, he has struggled a bit this season, but he will be looking to turn things around with Triple-A Lehigh Valley after being claimed off waivers by Philadelphia. It will be interesting to see if Hoffmann can earn a call-up from the Phillies before the end of the season from here.
