Rams HC Explains Reason for Aaron Donald's Second Tryout

The Los Angeles Rams and defensive tackle Aaron Donald continue to inch closer to a reunion.

The Los Angeles Rams recently hosted three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald for the second time after he had just worked out for the team two weeks again. That has some scratching their heads, given the amount of familiarity between both sides. However, Rams head coach Sean McVay revealed it was less about the team deciding whether it wants to bring Donald back and more about him deciding if it's the right move for him.

It’s part of his process that he’s going through. It just allows us to be able to use football equipment and it’s very similar to what the other workout was. . . That was just another part of his process.” Donald, 35, originally worked out for the Rams on Aug. 5 to evaluate how he felt.

But his return, this time to use team equipment, hints his return to the NFL is only a matter of time. It's understandable why Donald is so interested in coming out of retirement now a couple years removed, too. The Rams have loaded up for yet another Super Bowl run and the thought of playing next to two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett must be quite exciting for Donald.

Together, Donald and Garrett could form a dominant defensive line in Los Angeles to complement its electric offense. It remains to be seen how much good football Donald has left in him, but the answer to that question is at least some after he recorded 53 tackles, eight sacks and three passes defensed in his final season in 2023. A first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Donald has 542 tackles, 111 sacks, 24 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and 21 passes defensed in his professional career.
