Saints RB Alvin Kamara Could be Back Sooner Than Expected

New Orleans Saints veteran running back Alvin Kamara could be back on the field for Sunday's Week 1 matchup against the Lions.

Alvin Kamara was initially expected to miss at least the first few weeks of the 2026 season after he suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain on his right knee during training camp. However, there now appears to be a real possibility that the veteran running back takes the field for the New Orleans Saints' Week 1 matchup against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Kamara returned to practice on Wednesday, moving well upon his return to action.

"He shows up to practice today and it looks like nothing happened. He hasn't missed a step," quarterback Tyler Shough told reporters of Kamara on Wednesday. "It's going to be big for us just because he brings so much variety to our offense." On Thursday, Saints insider Nick Underhill said he expects Kamara to play this coming weekend.

I think he’s going to play on Sunday based on what we saw [Wednesday], barring a setback," Underhill reported. Kamara, 31, is entering his 10th season as a running back for the Saints. After intense negotiations this past season, the veteran ball carrier agreed to a reworked one-year, $6 million to stay in New Orleans.

Former Jaguars RB Travis Etienne, who the Saints acquired this past offseason, will serve as the team's lead back. Sunday's game will kick off at 1 p.m.
