Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold left Wednesday night's matchup against the Patriots after suffering a hip injury.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold left Wednesday night's Week 1 matchup against the New England Patriots after suffering a hip injury on the reigning Super Bowl champion's opening drive. Darnold was replaced by backup QB Drew Lock, who went on to lead the Seahawks to a 13-10 comeback victory. Immediately after the game, head coach Mike MacDonald said the Seahawks got "great news back" on their initial tests for Darnold.

The team was able to rule out a fracture as they prepared for further testing on the quarterback's hip. Darnold underwent an MRI on Thursday morning. It's uncertain how much time he's expected to miss, but sources say the Seahawks "dodged a bullet" in terms of avoiding a long-term injury.

"Seahawks QB Sam Darnold underwent an MRI on his hip this morning that team doctors still are reviewing to determine how much time he will miss. It is expected to be some, but for now the team believes it, as one source described, 'dodged a bullet,'" ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Thursday. The Seahawks will continue their 2026 campaign with a Week 2 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals next Sunday.
