Pittsburgh Penguins superstar center Sidney Crosby has provided an update about his future with the club ahead of his 22nd NHL season. While speaking to reporters at the NHL/NHLPA player media tour in Las Vegas, including The Athletic's Mark Lazerus, Crosby shared that he wants to continue playing for multiple more years but is unsure how many his body will let him. "Pat (Brisson)'s talking to Kyle (Dubas)," Crosby said to Lazerus.
"It’s just a little bit more difficult at my age as far as trying to project where you’re gonna be... I’d like to continue playing for a number of years. It’s just I don’t know what that number is.
I guess your mind and body tell you that eventually. Right now I feel pretty good, though." Crosby is entering his age-39 season, so there is no question that he is in the later stages of his career. Yet, even though he is nearing 40, he is still one of the NHL's best players.
His stats from the 2025-26 season show this, as he posted 29 goals, 45 assists, and 74 points in 68 games. He averaged over a point per game for the 21st season in a row, which means he has for his entire career. Hearing that Crosby is eager to continue his career is encouraging, but his comments about not knowing how much longer is concerning for Penguins fans.
Once the future Hall of Famer officially retires, the Penguins are going to be in a difficult spot trying to replace him. Crosby is entering the final season of his contract in 2026-27, so he is now eligible for a contract extension. It will be interesting to see if the Penguins sign him to a short-term one before the start of the season.
