Southwick House in England

atlasobscura.com 01.10.2026 20:00 4 views

Eisenhower was there and you can visit the ACTUAL MAP he looked at on that day. What an unusual place in a quaint English village!! Not to mention the yummy Tea House on the High Street in the village.

Southwick House was the home to SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force) in the lead up to D-Day. Thus, it is THE HOUSE where General Eisenhower and his staff waited to hear the results of the D-Day invasion. The ACTUAL maps that were used on that very day are still on display.

Anyone is able to see the house from the road, but visits into the House itself have to be made by prior arrangement. There are scheduled guided tours too. The restricted access is also interesting: the grounds around the home are now the location of the Defence School of Policing and Guarding, where all British Armed Forces police officers are trained.

It's also a lovely place to walk your canine friends.......and later, get those yummy tea and scones in the village. The museum is located in one of the two remaining military gymnasiums left in the United States. This historic World War II ship is one of only 4 Fletcher-class destroyers remaining worldwide. These enormous concrete blocks played a vital role in one of history's most important days.
