Two action flicks, Paramount’s “By Any Means” and A24’s “Onslaught,” arrived in theaters on Friday. But neither could dethrone “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which remains No. 1 in its sixth weekend in theaters. It’s now the fastest movie to cross the benchmark — doing so in just 36 days — and it beats the 50-day record set by 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The Marvel-Sony tentpole is projected to make $22 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend, pushing its domestic total to $922 million.
It’s only a matter of time until “Brand New Day” crosses $936 million and passes “The Force Awakens” as the highest-grossing domestic film of all time. Through Monday, it should pull in $16.4 million, pushing its North American haul to $588 million. Ketchup Entertainment’s “Coyote vs. Acme,” which also launched last week, fared much better in its second weekend.
On Friday, it collected $2.6 million, and by the end of the weekend, it should pull in about $15.3 million. That figure notches up the domestic total for the Looney Tunes comedy to $37.8 million. 20th Century’s “The Dog Stars” continues to struggle as it enters its second weekend. The dystopian drama made just $720,000 on Friday.
