Thanks to a last-second Hail Mary, Texas Tech has a suitable quarterback replacement for Brendan Sorsby after all. Sorsby was ruled ineligible after he admitted he had a gambling addiction and that he bet on his own team while he was a member of the Indiana Hoosiers, leaving Texas Tech to presumably start sophomore QB Will Hammond, who’ coming off a major ACL injury last season. However, after a handful of players were granted a fifth year of eligibility after leaving college — and some signing with NFL teams and competing during training camp — via a TRO granted by the court to allow them to continue playing, and an experienced signal-caller fell right into the Red Raiders’ lap.
According to multiple reports, former Florida State QB Tommy Castellanos committed to Texas Tech on Wednesday, giving the school an experienced 32-game starter to step in and fill the void left by Sorsby’s departure. Whether or not players who've spent any time with an NFL team should be allowed to play in college again has been a hot-button topic all week. The Big Ten and SEC have even implemented new rules banning such players from playing in their conferences.
Some fans weren't happy that Texas Tech agreed to bring in Castellanos for the 2026 season after he participated in the Miami Dolphins rookie minicamp this summer. During his four-year college career with UFC, Boston College, and Florida State, Castellanos threw for 6,449 yards, 48 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions while rushing for another 1,984 yards and 24 scores. After going undrafted this offseason, he did the Dolphins rookie minicamp tryout as a wide receiver but it didn’t go any further.
The 23-year-old Castellanos, who announced his Texas Tech commitment on his birthday, had previously tried to get an NCAA waiver for a fifth year of eligibility because he played just five games as a freshman at UCF before transferring to Boston College. It was denied, and Castellanos appealed the decision but later dropped it to take his chances in the 2026 draft.
