Second acts are apparently in considering some of the things happening in entertainment this week. Brad Pitt decided to give drinking another try while the rest of the country quietly puts down the glass. Nancy Mace is leaving Congress with tatted sleeves she kept hidden until the exit.
Marvel is handing the X-Men to a cast young enough to have missed the originals. A Heath Ledger classic is heading to Broadway with Carly Rae Jepsen songs attached. And a Knicks point guard is trading the court for the courtroom.
Call it reinvention season. Brad Pitt's relationship with alcohol is complicated, which puts him in very good company. He recently told Esquire he was "sober for seven years," and then he "got back off the wagon." The Oscar-winning actor and producer had previously copped to attending Alcoholics Anonymous after his 2016 split from Angelina Jolie, telling The New York Times in 2019 that he had "taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges." If anything, Pitt is bucking the trend.
Gallup's July 2025 survey found the share of U.S. adults who drink had fallen to 54 percent, the lowest in the poll's nearly 90-year run. Sobriety is having a cultural moment. Pitt, apparently, is not.
Whatever his reasoning, he isn't alone, and knowing he has walked himself to the door of help once already makes the whole thing land a little softer. Representative Nancy Mace is on her way out of Congress after placing fifth in South Carolina's Republican gubernatorial primary, but she isn't leaving empty-handed. She's leaving with her arms full, so to speak.
Mace recently unveiled sleeves of new tattoos on her YouTube channel, ink she had kept covered until now. She told Politico in February that she got the work done to "reclaim" her body, adding that it "keeps me alive." The reveal came as she laid out her post-Congress plans, which apparently include starting "some companies" (no word on what kind). Considering her colorful new form of expression, maybe a heavy metal era is next?
