Nicole Kidman Is the Last Cool Movie Star and She Isn't Even Trying

Nicole Kidman is promoting three shows and a sequel while going viral constantly, and somehow we only want more of her.

She's promoting her various shows (Scarpetta, Margo's Got Money Troubles and Lioness) and going viral roughly every third day in the process, all while gearing up for Practical Magic 2, the sequel to the witchy '90s comfort watch millions of us keep on in the background at all times. What's interesting about Kidman's cultural dominance is that we can't seem to get enough of her. Compare that to Anne Hathaway.

She's everywhere too, promoting five films this year and getting covered for essentially everything she does and says. But Hathaway inspires as much of a negative reaction as a positive one. Where Hathaway gets read as cringe or doing too much, Kidman is just...cool.

You could say this is culture pitting women against on another, and you'd be right, here and in roughly a thousand other examples. But it's still hard to argue with Kidman's cool factor. Putting a finger on why is harder.

If we had to point to one thing, it's that she isn't trying. She has nothing to prove. We know she's one of our greatest living actors, and she has the awards to back it up, so she's out here being whatever she wants to be, doing whatever she wants to do.

She's arguably one of the last great movie stars in a world being redefined by influencers. Whether she's turning up in Troye Sivan's "She's the Best" music video or confessing her love of Tweety Bird on Las Culturistas, everything Kidman does somehow makes her more watchable. Fortunately for us, Season 3 of HBO's Big Little Lies is on the way.
