Tony Dungy explained why he believes NBC chose to go in another direction with "Football Night In America" for this season.

In March, Tony Dungy revealed that NBC informed him he would not return for "Football Night in America" for the 2026 NFL season. Dungy, a Super Bowl-winning head coach, was hired by NBC Sports in 2009. In a statement on social media, Dungy said he was disappointed by NBC's decision not to retain him.

During an exclusive interview on "The Sage Steele Show," Dungy revealed what happened behind the scenes when he was let go from NBC. He and Rodney Harrison were told the network wanted new and younger voices on FNIA. Steele told Dungy that his willingness to share his views on faith and abortion might have played a role in NBC's decision.

"They want to have an audience of everyone. They don’t always appreciate you speaking about your faith,” Dungy said.

But people are going to know that I’m a Christian. So that part is never going to leave. I am pro-life, and I’m not gonna be ashamed to say that.” In his statement regarding being let go in March, Dungy said he believed in God's plan for his future.

"God has always directed me in these moments and while I’m not sure what the next step will be for me—whether it will be in football, in broadcasting, or getting more involved in church and community outreach—I know God has plans for my life and I can’t wait to see them unfold," Dungy wrote. "And I am reminded of one of my favorite verses in the Bible—Romans 8:28.
