Head coach Pete Golding and the Ole Miss Rebels escaped with a narrow 41-38 victory over the Louisville Cardinals on Sunday night to begin their season 1-0. While a win's a win, starting quarterback Trinidad Chambliss accepted blame for his mistakes in what could have gone terribly wrong for the Rebels. He later called out his "bad decisions" in postgame remarks.
"You obviously don't want to start like that. I'm making bad decisions, turning over the ball, not being comfortable in the pocket, and just not playing the type of ball I'm capable of. I guess I had to just get used to playing again," Chambliss told reporters, per ESPN.
Chambliss, who returned for another season under Golding, completed 21 of 36 passes for 336 yards and three touchdowns. However, he also made mistakes, including a fumble while attempting to run the ball in the first quarter and an interception he threw in the second quarter. Cardinals quarterback Lincoln Kienholz threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to teammate Tre Richardson, and a two-point conversion evened the score at 24-24. While Chambliss may have blamed himself for his earlier performance, he also threw two 62-yard touchdowns to wide receiver Deuce Alexander. He praised his talented teammate postgame, calling him a "playmaker" and " one of the best receivers in the country." Chambliss also came in clutch at the end to help his team win.
He converted on a third down with an 18-yard pass to set up Lucas Carneiro's game-winning 48-yard field goal. Rebels coach Pete Golding likened the Ole Miss-Louisville game to a "therapy session" and "heavyweight fight," with his team getting "punched in the mouth a lot" and not always responding "the right way." The Rebels will host Charlotte on Saturday, Sept. 12, with Golding hoping for a much better performance throughout from Chambliss and the rest of his players.
