"Whence the Weeping" is a side quest in Phantom Blade Zero that you start very early in the game. Unlike the "A Healer's Mercy" and "Flesh Lily" secondary missions, which have more straightforward objectives, this quest asks you to simply "find the source of the weeping." Besides, it takes longer to finish than one would assume based on when this side quest starts. To help you avoid wasting time while searching for the answer to this broad objective, we've put this walkthrough together explaining how to complete the "Whence the Weeping" side quest in Phantom Blade Zero.
There's a short and a long answer to this question. The short one is that you can only complete the "Whence the Weeping" quest later in the game. Keep following the icons on the map and talking to characters whenever there's a dialogue option about the weeping.
Following the noise won't help you progress in the quest. The best option is to visit the locations marked on the map with the quest's icons. The long answer is that the "Whence the Weeping" side quest is divided into multiple steps.
Some only become available after you have reached a certain point in the campaign or talked to characters about the weeping Soul has been hearing. These steps will take you to the Mountain of Imprisonment, where you must defeat the area's final boss to reach the source of the weeping. If you want to know exactly what to do while avoiding spoilers, here's a list of all the steps you must complete: Below, I explain more about each step, while avoiding major spoilers.
You start the "Whence the Weeping" quest right after Soul wakes up, following the carriage sequence in the Weeping Creek Valley. He mentions that "this weeping isn't in my head — it's drifting in from somewhere in the distance" then the text "find the source of the weeping" pops up on the screen. While you can't find the source yet, you can obtain some information about it.
During the "Against the Flow" main quest, you will meet Yu'er, a girl who's looking for a Flesh Lily to save her father. As you talk to her, choose the dialogue option "Ask about the Woman's Weeping." This is as far as you can progress for now. Focus on completing the Weeping Creek Valley and moving to the next area.
