Clarke Schmidt has not made an appearance for the New York Yankees since July 2025, after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Yet, based on a new update, it appears that Schmidt is finally getting closer to returning to the Yankees. While speaking to reporters, Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that it is possible that Schmidt could return to action for New York during their next road trip.
Hearing that there is a possibility that Schmidt will be given the green light to return for their upcoming road trip is undoubtedly promising. If he does return for New York during this final stretch of the season, he would have the potential to give their pitching staff a nice boost ahead of the playoffs. Schmidt is currently on a rehab assignment, where he has a 4.76 ERA and eight strikeouts in four appearances.
However, he has been getting stronger as his rehab assignment carries on. In his recent appearance for Double-A Somerset, he struck out two batters and did not allow a run in an inning pitched. This was after he struck out two batters and did not allow a run for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sep. 6.
It will now be interesting to see if Schmidt ends up being ready to return once New York's next road trip is here. In 14 appearances last season for the Yankees, the six-year MLB veteran posted a 4-4 record, a 3.32 ERA, and 73 strikeouts.
