Yankees Suddenly Cut Fan Favorite During Twins Series

The New York Yankees have designated utility player Oswaldo Cabrera for assignment during their series against the Twins.

With Clarke Schmidt being activated from the 60-day injured list and returning to the New York Yankees' roster, the AL East club has cut one of its fan favorites. The Yankees have announced that they have designated utility player Oswaldo Cabrera for assignment. With Schmidt returning from injury, the Yankees needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster.

With that, Cabrera has now become the odd man out and will be hitting the waiver wire because of it. Cabrera made just three appearances this season for the Yankees, where he went 0-for-9 at the plate. He spent most of this season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before being designated for assignment, where he posted 19 home runs, 69 RBI, and a .288 batting average in 122 games.

MLB teams looking for more depth could consider taking a gamble on Cabrera. While he has not gotten into a ton of major league action this season, he has a good amount of experience in the majors. In 304 games over five seasons with the Yankees, Cabrera posted 20 home runs, 95 RBI, and a .232 batting average.

It will now be interesting to see if another team claims him off of waivers from New York.
