A recent College Football Playoff team is changing conferences, and the move comes with a $23 million price tag.

College football is big business in the United States, and the money has driven major conference realignment in recent years. The biggest shake-up came in 2024, when Texas and Oklahoma left the Big 12 for the SEC. The Big Ten then grabbed USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington, essentially breaking up the Pac-12.

The Big 12 took in Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State and Utah, while Stanford, Cal and SMU moved to the ACC. A year earlier, BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF had joined the Big 12. Now, another school is changing conferences: James Madison, one of last year’s College Football Playoff participants.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, JMU has agreed to join the American Conference, officially leaving the Sun Belt, where it has been a member since 2022. Thamel reported that James Madison will pay a $23 million entrance fee to join the American. The school will receive a share of the American’s TV, postseason and NCAA revenue that aligns with other recent additions such as UAB, FAU, Charlotte, North Texas, Rice and UTSA, all of which joined in 2023.

Both the entry fee and the $5 million departure fee from the Sun Belt were privately raised, according to Thamel. The Dukes went 12-2, won all eight of their conference games and won their first-ever Sun Belt title.

They also earned the first CFP bid in program and Sun Belt history, though they lost to Oregon in the first round. This year looks even better so far. With first-year head coach Billy Napier in charge, JMU is 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Sun Belt.

The offense has put up big numbers, including an 87-3 win over Wagner, a 46-20 win at Old Dominion and a 45-17 win over Marshall. The closest call came Saturday, a 27-24 road win at Georgia Southern. Right now, the Dukes once again look like a playoff contender.
