49ers’ Christian McCaffrey on the Verge of NFL History vs Broncos

Christian McCaffrey has a Hall of Famer's record in his sights as the San Francisco 49ers host the Denver Broncos

Christian McCaffrey enters Week 4 one touchdown short of standing alone atop an NFL record book he shares with a Hall of Famer. The San Francisco 49ers running back and Marshall Faulk each have 36 receiving touchdowns, the most ever at the position, per SleeperNFL. His next scoring grab would break the tie.

His next shot comes on Oct. 4, when San Francisco hosts the Denver Broncos at Levi's Stadium. PT, and the game wraps up a three-game homestand. San Francisco has opened 3-0 with an offense producing at one of the highest rates in the NFL.

Denver's defense, though, figures to be the stiffest challenge so far. That unit carried the Broncos last time out. Denver trailed 16-0 at the half and still knocked off the Los Angeles Rams 30-26, even as quarterback Bo Nix passed for only 186 yards.

Talanoa Hufanga, a safety who once played for San Francisco, intercepted two throws and ran one of them back for a score. Injuries have unsettled the receiver room. Mike Evans is listed as questionable because of a rib injury, and the team brought Brandin Cooks up from its practice squad to share the load.

Jordan Watkins chipped in last week once Evans exited. With the wideout group banged up, more throws from Brock Purdy could find McCaffrey. McCaffrey himself was a full participant in practice all week.

He leads the team with 166 rushing yards on 35 carries, good for 55.3 per game, and has three touchdowns on the ground. Those scores have come in two of San Francisco's three games, one of which included more than one rushing touchdown. Hufanga, of all people, is now part of the defense standing between McCaffrey and touchdown catch No. 37.
