Deion Sanders Pushes Back at Reporter Over Question About Colorado QB Decision

Deion Sanders said former starting quarterback Julian "JuJu" Lewis knows why he dropped on Colorado's depth chart.

On Saturday night, the Colorado Buffaloes held a 7-3 halftime lead on the No. 12 Texas Tech Red Raiders, but then suffered a 26-0 second-half rout. Ahead of the game, news arrived that the team's starting quarterback through the first several games of the season, Julian "JuJu" Lewis, would not be starting for Colorado in Saturday's game. Instead, head coach Deion Sanders started Isaac Wilson against Texas Tech.

Following the crushing 29-7 loss, Sanders wasn't happy with his team's performance and also quickly corrected a reporter asking about Sanders "benching" Lewis from "first to third string" on the depth chart. "I would love JuJu to come here and he tell you what happens. So don't, 'You benched JuJu first to third string.' No, that's not how it went down," Sanders said, adding, "It didn't happen like that." Freshman Kaneal Sweetwyne also took a couple of snaps for Colorado. Asked about the quarterback competition since Wilson didn't play well, Sanders said, "It's always an open competition" regarding his team's starting quarterback in the coming weeks. "Somewhat disabling and disarming for us.

Every day it's like that," the Buffaloes' head coach said, adding, "We have three options there; somebody just has to grab a hold of it and get it done." This season, Lewis played in four games, in which the Buffaloes went 2-2. The sophomore quarterback has thrown for 733 yards and six touchdowns, with two interceptions and a dismal 47.7 QBR. Things won't get any easier for Colorado, as they'll next face No. 13 Utah on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Based on his answers at his postgame media session, Lewis has more of the story to tell about his fall on the depth chart, but there still seems to be a possibility he returns as the team's main quarterback.
