Eagles Make Intriguing QB Decision Hours Before Playing Rams

The Eagles shook up their QB room hours before facing the Rams, and one costly mistake against the Bears led to it.

The Philadelphia Eagles' Week 3 loss to the Chicago Bears showed just how important the backup quarterback role is in Philly, and now the team has made a big change. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Sunday morning, just hours before the Eagles play the Los Angeles Rams, that Tanner McKee has taken over as the No. 2 quarterback behind Jalen Hurts. Andy Dalton has been demoted to QB3.

Dalton entered the Bears game when Hurts left to be evaluated for a concussion. On 3rd-and-goal from the 2-yard line, at the end of a 95-yard drive, he forced a pass into the end zone that Bears rookie Dillon Thieneman intercepted. The pick wiped out a sure scoring chance and was Dalton's first interception from that close since 2013.

Hurts returned and led a touchdown drive to end the first half, but it was the only score for Philadelphia, and the Eagles fell 27-7 in Chicago. They're still atop the NFC East at 2-1, but the loss was a momentum killer, and they can't afford many more performances like that.

On Sunday, they host the Rams, a surprising 1-2 team coming off a devastating loss of their own, a 30-26 defeat to the Broncos on "Monday Night Football." The Eagles' season likely hinges on Hurts staying healthy, but Nick Sirianni clearly believes McKee is the safer option if he's needed. He has appeared in six games with two starts in his NFL career, completing 61.4% of his passes for 597 yards and five touchdowns with one interception.

He's 1-1 as a starter, and his last appearance came in Week 18 of the 2025 season, when he went 21-of-40 for 241 yards and one touchdown with one interception in a 24-17 loss to the Washington Commanders.
