Commanders Owner Teases Potential Future Logo Change

Josh Harris hinted the Washington Commanders could overhaul their logo, and one throwback detail is driving the push.

The Washington Commanders' spear is edging closer to the center of the franchise's identity. Commanders hope to give their spear-through-the-W design a bigger role, perhaps as the club's main logo, according to The Athletic's Nicki Jhabvala. League sources told her the target date is 2027, though nothing has been decided.

Managing partner Josh Harris, wearing a cap sporting the spear emblem, made his feelings clear while speaking with reporters on Oct. 3 in London. "Obviously, everyone is enjoying what we're doing, it's just embracing the past as much as we can in a respectful way, and we're gonna keep looking at, you know, how we keep doing that," Harris said, per ESPN's John Keim. You know, it brings everything together a little bit.

It brings, you know, obviously, the special forces and Native Americans and the Roman gladiators, of course. And, you know, obviously, we had it on our helmet way back." Also, the rebranding and positioning bring legal hurdles and financial costs, and plenty of stakeholders get a say. April brought the design's debut, along with an all-black alternate set for 2026.

Between 1965 and 1969, the team's burgundy helmets carried a spear-and-feather decal on both sides, and that look resurfaced on alternates over a two-year stretch beginning in 2002. Since rebranding as the Commanders before the 2022 campaign, Washington has leaned on a bold burgundy-and-gold W as its main mark. Harris has said the Redskins name, which the franchise dropped in 2020, won't return.

The Commander's name remains, even as the visual identity evolves. This ownership group likes a trial run. The Super Bowl Era uniforms followed the same path, starting as alternates before becoming the full-time look.

If the new mark clears its remaining hurdles, the Commanders would want it in place by the time the 2027 schedule kicks off.
