The San Francisco 49ers are moving on from one of the veterans along their defensive line. The team announced on Friday that it released ninth-year veteran defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo. Okoronkwo, 31, joined the 49ers on a one-year contract in August, reuniting with his former defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.
He was then released on August 30, but San Francisco signed him back to its practice squad the next day. Okoronkwo was eventually signed back to the active roster while recording two tackles and one sack through the first four games of the season. Okoronkwo began his professional career as a fifth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams.
He spent the first four years of his career in L.A. before joining the Houston Texans on a one-year deal in 2022. He had a breakout season in Houston, recording a career-high 44 tackles and five sacks. That earned him a three-year, $19 million contract with the Cleveland Browns the next offseason.
However, Okoronkwo's production began to decrease each of the following years and the Browns released him ahead of the 2025 season. He eventually joined the Philadelphia Eagles, but he suffered a triceps tear in Week 4 and was placed on injured reserve.
