The San Francisco 49ers have been hit hard with injuries early in the season, especially at wide receiver. Mike Evans became the latest wide receiver to suffer an injury. Per 49ers Webzone, tight end George Kittle hinted that Evans is dealing with a fractured rib injury he suffered in San Francisco's 36-30 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3.
The 49ers needed to look for outside help to give Brock Purdy another target now that Evans could miss some time. The 49ers are signing WR Dante Pettis, eight years after selecting him in the 2nd-round of the 2018 NFL Draft, per sources," Schultz posted on X.
"Pettis is headed back to where his NFL journey began." Pettis last played for the 49ers in 2020. He's spent time with the New York Giants, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Bills. He's recorded 92 receptions for 1,231 yards and 13 touchdowns in his career.
He caught nine passes for 127 yards with the Saints in 2025. Pettis was a standout in college for Washington, earning consensus All-American honors in 2017. "We'll have to evaluate him throughout the week," Shanahan said.
"It shouldn't be long term and we've got to see how it goes throughout the week." Still, the addition of Pettis will help for a 49ers team that has receivers Christian Kirk, Deshaun Stribling, Ricky Pearsall and Demarcus Robinson on injured reserve. Despite dealing with a plethora of injuries, the 49ers have a 3-0 record before getting set to host the 2-1 Denver Broncos on Sunday. Quarterback Brock Purdy has completed 72.3% of his passes for 789 yards, nine touchdowns and one interception through the first three weeks.
