The San Francisco 49ers are down yet another wide receiver following their latest injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Monday that Deebo Samuel will miss at least a couple of weeks with a hamstring strain. The 30-year-old went down in Sunday's 32-29 win over the Seattle Seahawks.
It's the latest blow to a position ransacked by injuries early this season. Christian Kirk, Demarcus Robinson, and De'Zhaun Stribling are all on the injured list, and Ricky Pearsall will miss the rest of the season after undergoing PCL reconstruction surgery. Samuel spent seven seasons with the 49ers before going to the Washington Commanders in 2025.
San Francisco reunited with the 2021 All-Pro this offseason on a one-year deal. The versatile playmaker has contributed 206 receiving yards, 79 rushing yards, and three touchdowns in five games for the undefeated 49ers. Samuel has also returned 11 kickoffs for 281 yards.
Samuel left Sunday's game in the third quarter after a hit by Seahawks linebacker Drake Thomas. He stayed on the ground before getting carried off the field. The 49ers finished the Week 5 game with four healthy wide receivers, but Mike Evans propelled them to a massive NFC West victory with 113 yards and a touchdown.
General manager John Lynch may still need to reinforce the depleted unit, as Jordan Watkins is second among healthy wideouts with just two catches this season. Shanahan's update means Samuel won't get a chance to play his former team when the 49ers host the Commanders on "Monday Night Football" next week. He could also miss a Week 7 tilt against the Atlanta Falcons before their bye.
