WNBA veteran Nneka Ogwumike announced she will be retiring at the end of the 2026 season. After 15 seasons in the WNBA and 10 as the president of the Women's National Basketball Players Association, Ogwumike has left her mark on the league. Atlanta Dream star Angel Reese expressed her gratitude for Ogwumike's contributions to the WNBA.
"I'm so happy for her, she looks like she can have five to 10 more years in her career. She's obviously been phenomenal in our league, she's fought for us behind the scenes. I know her career has been amazing for 15 years and me being able to be part of three is phenomenal.
"She's poured so much into all of us. It means so much for her to fight for all of us and fight for what's right and fight for the things that we deserve. She's seen the league 15 years ago and to be able to see where it is now, she's one of the big reasons of it," Reese said.
Although Reese and Ogwumike have never played on the same WNBA team, Ogwumike became a mentor for Reese early in her career. The pair have played together during WNBA All-Star games. "She's poured into me since I've been in the league.
She's one of my first vets. I remember my first All-Star, she was there with me in Phoenix. Being able to talk to me and being there for me as a person more than a player has been great," Reese said.
As Ogwumike wraps up her decorated career, Reese is preparing for her first playoff run with the Dream and for the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in September.
