Denver Broncos top CB needed two trainers to get him off the grass on Oct. 4, yet the early medical news reads far kinder. Patrick Surtain II, the Denver Broncos' All-Pro cornerback, hurt his ankle without contact as the second quarter wound down in a 24-14 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers. His Achilles tendon held up, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.
"Broncos star CB Patrick Surtain II is believed to have avoided a long-term injury Sunday, per sources. Surtain will undergo further testing for the non-contact injury to his ankle. But his Achilles is intact, and all indications are that he avoided any worst-case scenario." Surtain, 26, went down while covering Jacob Cowing on a passing down.
Hopping, he got treatment where he fell, then leaned on two staffers to leave. He was ruled out after halftime, having made four tackles. His running mate, Riley Moss, sat out the whole second half with a rib issue.
Kris Abrams-Draine and Jahdae Barron took over, logging their heaviest snaps since Surtain missed three games last November after getting hurt versus the Dallas Cowboys. Pat Bryant, also a starter at wide receiver, left on a cart after a tackle ended his 30-yard catch-and-run deep into the third quarter. Coach Sean Payton offered nothing new on anyone's health after the game, though he lamented an offense held to 82 rushing yards.
"We just didn't have enough offense to get a lead and then go beyond that. We just didn't have enough answers to get past that and get a lead," Payton said, according to The ' Josh Dubow. A three-time All-Pro with two first-team nods, Surtain was the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2024.
San Francisco managed three points against Denver's defense before the break. The defeat leaves the Broncos at 2-2. It's also their second loss away from home, equaling their road losses across all of 2025, a season that carried them to the AFC championship game.
