After months of negotiations, the New England Patriots finally got a deal done with star cornerback Christian Gonzalez. The two sides agreed to a new four-year, $135 million extension late Monday night. The deal includes $102 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $33.75 million, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
Surprisingly, though, the Gonzalez deal did more for the Patriots than lock down their top defender — it also broke an embarrassing, near-decade-long streak for the franchise. Gonzalez is the first former first-round pick to sign an extension with the team since Dont'a Hightower in 2017. Hightower was the Patriots' first-round pick (No. 25 overall) in 2012 after a dominant four-year college career at Alabama, where he won two national championships and consensus All-American honors as a senior.
By the time his Patriots career ended in 2021, he had won three Super Bowls, earned two Pro Bowl nods, and picked up second-team All-Pro honors in 2016. After that 2016 season — the final year of his rookie deal — the team signed him to a four-year, $43.5 million extension. But neither side wanted to take any chances, and now New England keeps its shutdown corner in Foxborough through the 2031 season. Gonzalez, the Patriots' first-round pick (No. 17 overall) in 2023, has quickly emerged as one of the league's best defensive backs. He earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2024, his first Pro Bowl nod last season, and landed at No. 28 overall on the NFL's Top 100 list this year.
