The Washington Commanders trenches have been hard in training camp, with defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton needing surgery for a torn pectoral and left tackle Laremy Tunsil suffering a torn triceps. Tunsil is a back loss for the Commanders, who signed the five-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle to a two-year, $60.2 million contract extension in March. After undergoing surgery for his triceps, Tunsil is expected to miss most, if not all, of the regular season.
On Tuesday, the Commanders made a savvy move to protect third-year quarterback Jayden Daniels at left tackle. Per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Washington is set to sign left tackle DJ Humphries to a one-year deal. "Source: The Commanders are signing former Pro Bowl LT DJ Humphries to a 1-year deal, adding key depth and starting experience to their O-line," Rapoport posted on X.
"With Laremy Tunsil out with a torn triceps, Humphries — who has 101 career starts mostly with the Cardinals — helps." He earned a Pro Bowl appearance in 2021. The six-foot-five, 302-pound athlete spent 2024 with the Kansas City Chiefs and last season with the Los Angeles Rams.
Washington had used third-year offensive lineman Brandon Coleman at starting left tackle during training camp after Tunsil suffered his injury. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said earlier in training camp that Tunsil was hard to replace. "It's always tough to talk about a player missing time, especially a great player like LT," Quinn said, via ESPN.
"Not only is he an unbelievable player, but he is an absolutely fantastic teammate. He'll be missed, and we certainly can't wait to get him back." Humphries won't give the Commanders offense the same push that Tunsil would have provided. But his experience will be valuable for the offense until Tunsil is ready to return.
