Las Vegas Raiders star running back Ashton Jeanty suffered a right ankle sprain in practice on Sunday, and panic immediately set in. He was the No. 6 overall pick in last year's draft and was expected to be the Raiders' workhorse back this season under new head coach Klint Kubiak, the architect behind the Seahawks' Super Bowl-winning offense. Jeanty landed awkwardly on the turf while diving for a low pass from quarterback Kirk Cousins and was unable to put any weight on his leg, needing to be helped off the field.
However, it looks like the Raiders were able to avoid the worst-case scenario, with Jeanty believed to be dealing with a low ankle sprain rather than a high ankle sprain. The difference is notable. Low ankle sprains typically take only a few weeks, at most, to heal, while high ankle sprains can take up to six weeks, if not longer.
Yet Kubiak has still yet to give a formal medical breakdown, simply saying during Tuesday's press conference that Jeanty is "on the mend." "Really excited about getting him back. I'm a huge believer in the power of prayer," Kubiak said, subtly implying that the injury isn't too serious. With a new head coach, a new offensive system, two new quarterbacks, and a set of new pass catchers, Jeanty and tight end Brock Bowers feel like the only sure things on offense heading into 2026. Jeanty nearly rushed for 1,000 yards last season, and that was with one of the worst offensive lines in football. Now, that unit has improved, and Kubiak has already outlined his intention to use Jeanty as a true bell-cow back.
All signs point to him having a big year, and now that the injury scare appears to be minor, he can begin ramping up for Week 1 against the Dolphins on Sunday, Sept. 13. More news: Matt LaFleur Sends Lighthearted Warning to Brother Mike LaFleur
