A depleted quarterback room has the Washington Commanders exploring alternatives. Jayden Daniels missed Washington's Week 4 loss to the Indianapolis Colts with a dislocated left elbow, and Marcus Mariota left the London game early with a sprained right MCL. Seventh-round rookie Athan Kaliakmanis finished the game, going 15-of-33 for 186 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in his NFL debut.
The Commanders aren't placing Mariota on the injured list and hope Daniels can return to start Sunday's NFC East matchup against the New York Giants. But they're still examining potential outside help. Washington worked out Jack Plummer on Wednesday morning, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
This year's UFL MVP "threw well" and could be a candidate if the Commanders choose to sign someone, but they're standing pat at quarterback for now. Plummer signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2024 after throwing 68 touchdowns in five college seasons for Purdue, California, and Louisville. Although elevated to the active roster twice as a rookie, he's never appeared in an NFL game.
Waived before the 2025 season, Plummer joined the UFL's Orlando Storm this year. He led them to a league-best eight wins with 2,188 passing yards, 17 passing touchdowns, and one interception in 10 games. The Commanders may not need another quarterback if Daniels returns for Week 5 and Mariota doesn't miss much time.
Sam Hartman is also on the practice squad, but the former Notre Dame star has never attempted an NFL pass. Sunday's game between the Commanders and Giants kicks off at 1 p.m.
