It's now or never for Falcons' Tua Tagovailoa this season.

Tua Tagovailoa isn't walking into his first season in Atlanta with a ton of breathing room. The Falcons' quarterback situation has been one of the more fascinating ones to watch, with Tagovailoa appearing to have the early edge over Michael Penix Jr. Part of that is simply because Penix hasn't been taking part in full-team drills, giving Tagovailoa an opportunity to establish himself as the presumed starter.

Instead, his preseason debut left something to be desired. Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports has placed Tagovailoa in the hot seat heading into the 2026 season, and his first preseason appearance didn't exactly help make the case for a comfortable year ahead. Sports news: Raiders Rookie Was Wildly Impressive in Preseason Debut Tagovailoa had an uninspiring showing in the Falcons' first preseason game, and even he acknowledged that it wasn't good enough.

He described the performance as "definitely not up to standard." That's not really what Atlanta wanted to hear from the quarterback expected to lead the offense. The Falcons' situation is also unique because Tagovailoa isn't just trying to prove he can play well. He's trying to establish himself as the answer at a position where Penix remains very much part of the mix.

For now, Tagovailoa appears to have the advantage. But that advantage can disappear quickly if the veteran doesn't take advantage of his chances. Once the competition becomes more complete, every uneven performance is going to matter a little more. That's why 2026 is shaping up to be an important season for Tagovailoa. He has the chance to take control of the Falcons' quarterback situation, but he'll need to play like someone who deserves that control.

The first preseason game didn't provide much reassurance. But, he's a talent, and better days may be ahead.
