It was reported Tuesday that New York Giants starting quarterback Jaxson Dart would likely miss the rest of the season due to his knee injury that he suffered on "Monday Night Football" in Week 2. Since then, the Giants have been linked to numerous big-name signal-callers in trade rumors and free agency chatter, including Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy and former San Francisco 49ers mobile threat Colin Kaepernick.
ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter mentioned two more potential options for New York during an appearance on "Get Up" Thursday morning. Schefter tabbed Arizona Cardinals backup Gardner Minshew and 49ers second-in-command Mac Jones as possibilities. Importantly, the longtime NFL media member noted that it would cost "a lot" to "get (Jones) out of (San Francisco,) if the 49ers are even willing." Schefter added that for now, the Giants "want to see how this week goes" with veteran backup Jameis Winston under center "before they make any reactions." Minshew is in his eighth NFL season and first with the Cardinals.
The 30-year-old one-time Pro Bowler is with the sixth team of his career and fifth in as many years. Minshew spent the 2025 campaign with the Kansas City Chiefs as a backup to Patrick Mahomes and finished the season 6-for-13 with 37 passing yards, no touchdowns and one interception in four games, including one start. He hasn't taken any snaps through Arizona's first two contests in 2026.
Jones is in his sixth NFL campaign and second with the Niners. The 2021 Pro Bowler and AP Offensive Rookie of the Year runner-up had a renaissance season in 2025, filling in for an injured Brock Purdy to lead San Francisco to a 5-3 record in his eight starts. Jones finished the year with a career-high 69.6% completion percentage and 97.4 passer rating, as well as 2,151 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions across 11 contests.
