Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is likely to miss the rest of the season after suffering a thumb injury Sunday on his first play since returning from a high ankle sprain, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Jackson missed Baltimore's final three games in October due to his ankle issue before returning to action for the Ravens' Week 8 road game against the Buffalo Bills. His comeback was short-lived, however, as the two-time MVP hurt his right thumb early in the first quarter of Sunday's loss after hitting his hand on Bills linebacker Greg Rousseau's arm on his follow-through on a pass attempt.
Baltimore head coach Jesse Minter announced following the contest that Jackson would undergo surgery and be placed on injured reserve (IR). To make matters worse, Ravens backup signal-caller Tyler Huntley also suffered an injury versus Buffalo, going down with a toe ailment in the first half. Baltimore's emergency quarterback, undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, took over and is currently in line to start the Ravens' "Thursday Night Football" game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 9.
Fagnano finished his NFL debut versus the Bills 10-for-21 with 91 passing yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Jackson has struggled to stay healthy in recent seasons, missing five games apiece during the 2021 and 2022 campaigns and four more contests last season. Baltimore started the year 4-1 and was at the top of the AFC North standings entering Week 6.
The Ravens have lost three in a row since then, however, and are now in last place in the division at 4-4.
