The Detroit Red Wings are the biggest team to watch in the trade market, as star center Dylan Larkin and young defenseman Simon Edvinsson both want to be traded by the Original Six club. Yet, Larkin is now not the only Red Wings star forward who is creating chatter in the rumor mill. In a recent article for Daily Faceoff, Steven Ellis predicted that the Red Wings will trade star winger Alex DeBrincat by the 2027 NHL Trade Deadline.
"DeBrincat is a 28-year-old pending UFA who’s always in the 40-goal ballpark – and given he’s coming off his best year to date, he’d be an intriguing trade target for a legit contender," Ellis wrote. "With the UFA market continuing to get quieter with many of the biggest names signing deals, DeBrincat could get a massive payday this summer. If you’re the Red Wings, why not try to cash out before he hits the open market?" Seeing DeBrincat named a trade candidate to watch is understandable.
He is in the final season of his contract, and he is too valuable of a player for the Red Wings to potentially lose for nothing in free agency this offseason. Thus, if he still does not have a contract extension signed closer to the deadline, the Red Wings could very well listen to trade offers for him. If the Red Wings make DeBrinat available for trade, he would generate a ton of interest around the NHL.
He would be a major pickup for any playoff team looking for more scoring, and his stats from last season show this. In 82 games last season for Detroit, he posted 41 goals and 85 points. He has also recorded at least 67 points in each of his last five seasons.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see what happens between the Red Wings and DeBrincat this offseason. Their top priority right now should be to try to extend him.
