Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain may be able to return to the field sooner than expected.

Denver Broncos fans have been holding their breathes since watching two-time first-team All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Pat Surtain suffer an ankle injury during the team's Week 4 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. However, Broncos head coach Sean Payton recently provided a promising injury update on Surtain. Payton told reporters that he does not expect Surtain to be placed on injured reserve.

Surtain is not only one of the Broncos' best players, but one of the best players in the league. The 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year has already recorded 21 tackles and one pass defensed this season. For now, it's safe to assume Surtain won't be suiting up for the Broncos' Week 5 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers after not practicing on Wednesday.

However, the Broncos' decision to forego placing Surtain on injured reserve means that they plan to have him back on the field within the next three weeks. The Broncos are surely hoping Surtain's return comes sooner rather than later, but it seems he has avoided a serious injury that some may have feared he had. A first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Surtain has recorded 300 tackles, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, 60 passes defensed, 12 interceptions and two touchdowns in his professional career.
