Kamari Ramsey made a major first impression for the Houston Texans, shining in his NFL preseason debut and immediately showing why the rookie could be a player to watch. Ramsey played 14 coverage snaps and didn't allow a single reception while serving as the primary coverage defender.
That's a solid start for any young defensive back, especially one getting his first taste of NFL action. Ramsey also made sure to create plays of his own, recording both a pass breakup and an interception. Ramsey wasn't simply avoiding mistakes. He was actively making a difference on the defensive side of the ball. His performance earned him a 94.8 PFF grade, making Ramsey the highest-graded rookie in the NFL during the opening week of the preseason.
His 94.7 coverage grade was a major reason for that overall mark. For the Texans, it's a good early sign from a fifth-round selection. Ramsey has already shown that he can compete in coverage, and his ability to come away with an interception gives Houston another reason to be excited about his development.
PFF's Gordon McGuinness also included Ramsey among his players to watch after the opening week of preseason action. Considering how well Ramsey performed in his debut, it's easy to see why the rookie caught his attention. Of course, one preseason game won't determine what Ramsey's role will ultimately look like during the regular season.
He'll have more chances to prove that his debut wasn't a one-time performance. Still, he couldn't have asked for a much better beginning.
