UCLA Bruins starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava was ruled out of the second half of Saturday's matchup versus the Oregon Ducks after he sustained a knee injury. It was unclear how severe Iamaleava's injury was as he originally only missed one play in the first half. Heading into halftime, UCLA coach Bob Chesney even told reporters that the quarterback was fine and had dealt with a thigh issue.
But, he was ruled out in the second half, so it was clear it was more than just a "thigh issue." On Monday, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Iamaleava is out indefinitely with the knee injury, and there is no timeframe in which he could return. Therefore, Iamaleava could miss the rest of the 2026 season. He is still set to undergo a medical evaluation.
Before leaving Saturday's eventual 17-15 win over Oregon, Iamaleava completed 10-of-17 passes for 162 yards and two interceptions, including one that ended his performance on the field before he was ruled out after the half. In five starts this season, the quarterback completed 62.1% of passes for 982 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. While Iamaleava is out for however long UCLA ends up deciding, backup quarterback Ty Dieffenbach will step up in his place.
He completed 3-of-6 passes for 43 yards and one touchdown in his short performance on Saturday, his first of the season. This is Dieffenbach's first year with the Bruins after he transferred from Cal Poly. The redshirt junior is aware of the big opportunity he's been given by Iamaleava being out now.
"Every week is a battle between me and Madden [Iamaleava, Nico's brother] for the two spot. Both of us were executing in practice but today they felt to go with me," Dieffenbach said after Saturday's game. I've been waiting for this moment." The 5-0 Bruins will face Wisconsin on Saturday without Iamaleava.
