Veterans who rely on disability benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will soon be due their next payment—but when will it arrive? VA disability compensation is a federal benefit for veterans who have longstanding health conditions or disabilities that are connected to their military service. A broad range of conditions are included, from chronic illnesses, mobility impairments to mental health conditions.
Around 6.5 million veterans currently receive these payments. Payments aren't just limited to veterans: eligible family members, including surviving spouses, children, and dependent parents, may also receive benefits. VA disability compensation is paid in arrears, meaning benefits for a given month are issued at the beginning of the following month.
Payments are typically made on the first business day of the next month. In October, beneficiaries will actually receive two rounds of payments. On October 1, recipients will get their September benefits.
Later in the month, on October 30, benefits for the same month will be paid. The later payment comes slightly earlier than usual as November 1 is a Sunday, and payments are only made on working days Monday through Friday. How much veterans can get varies based on the severity of a condition, whether there are multiple, and whether they have dependents, such as a spouse or children.
Benefits are based on a rating from 0 to 100 percent, assigned in 10-point increments. The higher the rating, the larger the monthly payment. Each rating carries a set compensation amount.
A veteran with a 10 percent disability rating, for example, receives $180.42 per month, while a veteran rated 100 percent disabled receives a base monthly payment of $4,085.43. Veterans rated 30 percent disabled or higher may qualify for additional payments if they have eligible dependents, such as a spouse, children or parents. A veteran with a 100 percent disability rating and a spouse and one child, for example, would receive $4,318.99 per month.
