The All-Star backcourt combination of Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell has powered the Indiana Fever this season, as the team pushes towards the WNBA Playoffs. With that, both players have been in the discussion for the league's Most Valuable Player award, and the Fever seem to be campaigning for a historic situation at the end of the season. On Thursday, the team uploaded a social media video clip to promote both players for the award, suggesting an "MVP²" in their message.
The clip highlights that the duo averaged 72.5 combined points per game and were the No. 2 and No. 3 scorers in the league. In addition, they achieved the "most combined points by a duo" through a 17-game span in WNBA history. According to the Fever's campaign video, they are the highest-scoring duo in WNBA history, scoring 46.9 points per game.
Clark and Mitchell also had 30-plus points each in three games, the most of any two teammates in WNBA history. Clark and Mitchell have also set a single-season record for the most WNBA games where a duo had 20-plus points, with 18 games.
Clark is enjoying a healthy bounce-back season, participating in 35 games, after appearing in just 13 all of last season. She's averaging 22.1 points, 8.3 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game, with 45% field goal shooting. Mitchell's 24.8 points per game are only second to the Las Vegas Aces' A'ja Wilson.
She's also shooting an impressive 51% field goal percentage and 45.5% for 3-point shooting. The combined talents of these players have propelled Indiana to a 25-14 record, which is currently fifth in the WNBA standings. They'll be in the postseason, and they're certainly a team that can make a deep run, seeing as they were a threat last year without Clark in the lineup.
Should the Fever's "MVP²" campaign prove successful, it would be an unprecedented and historic award situation in professional basketball. There's never been a co-MVP in the NBA, nor the WNBA. There have been co-Rookie of the Year winners in the NBA, and last year, the WNBA featured co-Defensive Player of the Year winners.
