The New York Jets have dropped three straight after their season-opening win over the Tennessee Titans. The defense has been among the strongest units in the NFL under head coach Aaron Glenn, a former Lions defensive coordinator, but the offense has struggled. The Jets are averaging just 286 total yards and 19 points per game, both in the bottom third of the league.
Unfortunately, they now face a hot Browns team Sunday without two of their best offensive players: running back Breece Hall and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday morning that both have been ruled out with injuries. In that game, Braelon Allen took over as the lead back and finished with 14 carries for 59 yards, averaging 4.2 yards per carry, but the Jets fell 23-12 in Chicago. Allen will hope to get more going Sunday against a Browns defense that ranks in the middle of the pack against the run. Mitchell, meanwhile, is dealing with a finger injury that will sideline him for a third straight game.
He looked good in his first two games this season, catching nine passes on 14 targets for 123 yards and topping 60 receiving yards in both. Without him, the Jets offense has struggled to move the ball down the field, including putting up just 98 passing yards against the Bears last week. The good news is the Browns just gave up 299 yards through the air to the Steelers in Week 4, which bodes well for the Jets' remaining pass catchers. Kickoff Sunday is set for 1:00 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium, with the Jets listed as 2.5-point favorites.
