Several months ago, one of the NBA's blockbuster multi-team trades featured the Minnesota Timberwolves sending a core part of their starting lineup, Julius Randle, to the Brooklyn Nets. The trade package also included the No. 28 pick in this past June's NBA Draft, with the Timberwolves getting Brooklyn's No. 33 pick and Mo Gueye. Mostly, this helped Minnesota to free up $33 million in cap space as they continue to try to give Anthony Edwards the sort of supporting cast he needs to reach the NBA Finals.
Meanwhile, it sent Randle, a three-time NBA All-Star, to the Nets, a team that hasn't played in recent seasons like one that players want to join. During Tuesday's Nets media session, Randle opened up about how he felt about going to Brooklyn. Extremely happy basketball-wise. This is a great place to be, a great team to build a culture here. My oldest son is back at his old school; my family, everybody's really happy," Randle told reporters on Tuesday.
After becoming the Los Angeles Lakers' No. 7 pick in 2014, the former Kentucky standout has played for various teams during his NBA career. He spent several seasons playing with the New Orleans Pelicans and was then traded to the New York Knicks, where he played from 2019 to 2024. Randle became an All-Star while playing for the Knicks, but that was before they made big moves to improve their roster.
One of them was trading Randle to the Minnesota Timberwolves for frontcourt star Karl-Anthony Towns, while another involved bringing in Jalen Brunson, formerly of the Dallas Mavericks. Those moves were significant for New York, which captured a championship this offseason, and many immediately pointed to Towns getting the better end of the trade. Time will tell if Randle's move to Brooklyn pays off and this team can somehow climb back into a respectable spot in the Eastern Conference, or will continue to struggle.
Either way, Randle seems pleased to be back in the area, and that could be the start of him giving more All-Star-worthy contributions in the New York area.
