AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND — Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said AI should not be regulated like social media because AI is a “technology” rather than a “product.” Speaking at an AI event convened by King Charles III at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland, Huang told journalists that AI is “very different than social media” and that at present the security issues involving AI are “related to products not ready to be released.” His remarks come as governments around the world are grappling with whether to place regulatory constraints on AI, and after AI executives, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, have called for a slowing of AI development. He said authorities should monitor for when an AI deployment “goes wrong” and “whenever new laws are necessary, add to the existing laws,” but pointed out that there are existing regulations in sectors where AI is deployed such healthcare, transportation, and entertainment. Rigorous testing systems are needed, he said, in contained testing labs.
