Illinois QB Katin Houser Makes Stunning Return After Hand Surgery

Illinois QB Katin Houser returns weeks ahead of schedule after hand surgery, helping the Fighting Illini beat Maryland 20-17.

Illinois quarterback Katin Houser wasn't expected to return to the field anytime soon. Instead, he helped the Fighting Illini secure their third consecutive victory Saturday. Less than three weeks after suffering a broken right hand, Houser returned to the starting lineup and helped Illinois defeat Maryland 20-17 in a dramatic Big Ten matchup.

The victory came on a 26-yard field goal from Ethan Moczulski as time expired, completing a late comeback for the Fighting Illini. Houser finished the afternoon completing 18 of 32 passes for 223 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also added 18 rushing yards, giving him 241 total yards of offense.

His return was particularly surprising considering the severity of his injury. Houser suffered the broken hand during Illinois' overtime victory against Michigan State on Oct. 10 and underwent surgery shortly afterward. Initial expectations suggested the quarterback could miss four to six weeks, but his recovery progressed significantly faster than anticipated.

Illinois head coach Bret Bielema revealed after Saturday's victory that Houser had pushed to return during the week, despite not participating fully in practice earlier in the week. The decision ultimately paid off, although Illinois faced considerable adversity against Maryland. The Terrapins led 14-10 entering the fourth quarter before freshman running back Javari Barnett broke free for a 64-yard touchdown run, giving Illinois its first lead of the afternoon.

Maryland responded with a field goal to tie the game at 17. With 5:45 remaining, Houser and the Illinois offense took possession at their own 26-yard line and began marching downfield. The Fighting Illini put together a 13-play, 67-yard drive, setting up Moczulski's game-winning field goal.

Wide receiver Collin Dixon also delivered a strong performance, finishing with six receptions for 103 yards. The victory improved Illinois to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in Big Ten play, moving the program within one win of bowl eligibility. Illinois will return home to face Nebraska on Friday in another important conference matchup.
